Relatives of Surojdeo Deochand, who was found murdered in the lower flat of his house on Tuesday afternoon, are claiming that the man was threatened numerous times in the past and his house was stoned several times causing him to relocate for months.
Police yesterday morning had issued a wanted bulletin for Mark Anthony Henry, 24, the brother of Joel Henry, who they said is needed for questioning in connection with the circumstances surrounding Deochand’s murder. However police last evening confirmed that Henry had since turned himself over to police at CID headquarters in Georgetown.
Deochand, also known as ‘Sagie’, 68, of Lot 35 Number Three Village, West Coast Berbice, was found in a pool of blood in his house around 5.30 pm on Tuesday. According to the police, the man sustained a wound to the left side of his face, one to the back of his head, one on his left hand and one on his right hand causing three fingers to be severed.
Relatives last evening informed that a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out this morning.
Deochand’s relatives had said that the pensioner resided alone, next door to Joel Henry. Relatives last evening told Stabroek News that after the man was arrested for questioning in connection with the murders of Joel Henry and Isaiah Henry and released after 72 hours he began to receive threats. “During the protests and after they use to pelt his house down and he left and go at the Koker next to Berbice Bridge and live with some friends for months and he only come back about one week now,” one relative noted.
Deochand, a father of two, was described as an easy going pensioner. “Me know him for 34 years, he is very easy going,” the relative added.
According to the woman, the family is in a state of shock and are afraid whether any other relatives might suffer the same fate. “Right now we na want give name and really talk much because we very scared. The whole family scared,” the woman stated.
