Four new COVID-19 deaths yesterday pushed Guyana’s death toll to 235 while 126 new cases were confirmed.
The Ministry of Health announced the deaths at separate times and noted that the 232nd and the 233rd deaths were recorded as of Wednesday. They were identified as a 91-year-old woman from Region Four and an 84-year-woman from Region Ten, who both died while receiving care at medical facilities.
The 234th and 235th deaths were recorded yesterday, according to the ministry. They were identified as two men, a 62-year-old from Region Three and a 45-year-old from Region Four. They also died while receiving care at medical facilities.
Meanwhile, the 126 new cases that were recorded increased the total number of confirmed positive cases in the country to 10,375 since March last year and came after some 1,273 persons were tested for the virus. As a result, the total number of persons tested in the country now stands at 91,231.
There are now 971 active cases in the country, with 64 persons in institutional isolation and another 907 in home isolation. The majority of the new cases were recorded in regions Three and Four, with 27 in Region Three and 62 in Region Four.
Twelve persons remain in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit even as some 61 more persons have recovered from the virus thus increasing the total number of recovered cases to 9,159.
A national vaccination campaign is currently underway to immunise the population against the severe effects of COVID-19. At present, persons who are 40 years and older are being targeted.
