The body of 19-year-old Joel Skeete was yesterday afternoon discovered on the shore of the West Bank of the Demerara River in the vicinity of Belle Vue.
A family member last night confirmed to this newspaper that following the discovery of the body, police made contact with the family and requested that they visit the funeral home. The relative that visited the funeral home after viewing the body was able to confirm it was him, a cousin of the mother Lorenza Griffith last night said.
Police in a statement last night said that the discovery was made at approximately 1.45 pm and Skeete was found lying facing downwards. He was found among some rocks.
At the time of the discovery, the body was clad in dark grey long pants and a burgundy jersey, police said.
A release from his family on Saturday said that he was last seen leaving the barber shop at the Harbour Bridge Mall, Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara, around 7 pm on Wednesday. He was dressed in a dark red T-shirt, dark grey long jeans and red slippers.
Skeete was a Computer Science major at the University of Guyana.
In a statement today, the University of Guyana said: “Our Care Team is deployed and ready to give whatever support is needed to the family and friends including those who taught him who are deeply disturbed and saddened.
“The University community mourns his loss and hopes that the authorities will be able to provide answers so desperately sought by those who survive him”.
