The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) has taken a decision to halt all cricket activities due to a rise in the COVID-19 cases.
This is according to President of the BCB and Guyana Cricket Board vice-president, Hilbert Foster.
Foster speaking with Stabroek Sport yesterday said that the decision was taken by the board after noticing the increasing numbers in the county.
“The BCB has noted with concern the rapid rise in our country COVID-19 cases. There have been a big jump in our cases in Berbice and we are of course very concerned with the well-being of our players and officials,” the BCB said in a statement.
“With [that] in mind, the BCB would be putting a temporary hold on our 2021 cricket season while we look at this worrying trend.”
“The Ministry of Health has issued a warning of a deadlier wave of the virus, which affects even young persons.
“We would review the situation in two weeks and we would like to urge all clubs to put on hold all practice sessions,” the BCB added.
“Our health should be our main concern now. The BCB from next weekend would also advice against the organising of inter club matches. Please let us all cooperate to stop the spread of this deadly disease,” said Foster.
The BCB has currently six tournaments ongoing with four more booked to begin this week but will now be rescheduled.
Most of the 2020 season globally was o abandoned due to the global pandemic with Guyana following suit.
Since the pandemic reached Guyana in March 2020, the South American mainland has recorded 10,580 cases with 341 new cases within the past week. In Region Six, 37 cases have been recorded in the last week.
