A 16-year-old pedal cyclist succumbed yesterday after he was hit by a vehicle on the No. 6 Public Road, West Coast Berbice (WCB) on Monday driven by a GDF corporal who was above the legal limit for alcohol.
The cyclist was identified by his mother today as Lakeram Sirkissoon of No. 7 Village, WCB.
According to the police, the driver alleged that he saw the cyclist cycling across the road from the northern to the southern side of the road. The driver claimed that on seeing this, he tried to pull right to avoid a collision, but despite his effort, he collided into the rear of the said pedal cyclist.
A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver showed a reading of .70 and .76 micrograms of alcohol in his blood, the police said. The legal limit is .35 and below.
