Three persons were last week charged with the murder of Nico Layne, who was chopped to death at Leopold Street in Georgetown on Sunday, March 28.
The three accused are Osafi Johnson, 28, a mason of East Ruimveldt, Randy Tafari, 20, also known as Randy Robertson, of West Ruimveldt, and Natasha Taitt, 32, a vendor of East Ruimveldt.
They all appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in a Georgetown court last Thursday.
It is alleged that on March 28, while on Leopold Street, they murdered Layne. They were not required to plead to the indictable charge and were remanded to prison until May 11, when the matter will be called again.
The police reported that at 3.30 am on the fateful day, Layne, 29, was on High Street, where a game of cards was being played by a group of men. The police said after some time he realised that his bicycle was missing and he went in search of it. Around 4.30 am he was seen running on High Street heading south and then east on Leopold Street. He was being chased by three suspects – two males and a female – armed with a knife and a cutlass.
The police said Layne fell and his pursuers then inflicted several chops and stabs about his body. The perpetrators then fled after which Layne was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the George-town Public Hospital (GPH). He was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty. The police say that the body was examined and what appeared to be a wound was seen under his right armpit, one to the upper left side of his chest and three on his right forearm.
The three suspects were later arrested. One was seen with a wound on his forehead and on the left side of his face and was taken to the GPH for treatment. The police said he claimed that Layne tried to rob his reputed wife at the Stabroek Market area and he intervened and Layne wounded him with a knife.
