The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) yesterday announced that all their ongoing competitions will be suspended due to the spiraling numbers of COVID-19 cases.
GCA had restarted their competitions only last month with this week expected to see semi-final action in the GISE/Star Party Rental/Trophy Stall first-division two-day tournament along with group matches in the Noble House Seafoods second-division two-day competition and the New Building Society 40-over tournament.
“With effect from Saturday 10th April, all GCA Cricket Competitions [and] Matches are suspended until further notice due to the spike in the COVID-19 Virus,” a GCA release stated.
However, the body will host a final match between the New York Tri-State under-15 and Muslim Youth Organisation in a two-day encounter from today.
Chairman of the Competitions Committee, Shaun Massiah, said that the decision comes in the best interest of the safety and wellbeing of the players and officials.
He pointed out that the GCA had already circulated a document with the necessary guidelines and regulations that were important to the resumption of cricket in Georgetown.
Massiah said that he has consistently stressed the importance of practicing social distancing, using sanitizers as well as masks and washing hands. He thanked the various clubs for their efforts in following the guidelines.
Guyana recorded 81 new cases yesterday to bring the total cases for the first week in April to 469. Overall, Region Four has recorded over 5000 cases while country-wide, 10,718 persons have been affected with the death toll at 250.
