Seeraj Liala aka ‘Spring Cat’ and his wife Chandrawattie Narine are this week’s ‘fruits and vegetables’ personalities. ‘Spring Cat’ is 74, a pensioner, and he and Chandrawattie sell vegetables at Stall 13B, Hydronie Market, East Bank Essequibo. The two are in their thirty second year of marriage and have been buying and selling vegetables for two decades. Prior to teaming up with her husband Chandrawattie worked alone as a vendor, while Seeraj worked as a porter moving loads of fruit and vegetables, among other goods, for farmers and vendors. At the end of his own working day ‘Spring Cat’ would join his wife at the stall.
‘Spring Cat’ talks enthusiastically about their modest ‘mark-ups’, the sloth of the Hydronie Market, and simply giving away what is left at the end of a trading day. Chandrawattie says she would like to see more people taking advantage of the bounty of vegetables currently on the market.
The couple have five children, fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
In this the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables the Stabroek Business salutes ‘Spring Cat’ and Chandrawattie.
