Despite being snubbed by the Golden Jaguars management team for the recently concluded opening rounds of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, midfielder Neil Danns disclosed that he still harbours intentions of representing Guyana when the competition resumes in June.
This was disclosed in a brief comment yesterday with Stabroek Sport. According to the experienced central midfielder, he would love to feature as a member of the team for the important matches. As he put it, “I would love to play in June. My season finishes on the 31st of May so I will be fully fit if selected.”
Danns, 38, was unexpectedly axed from the Golden Jaguars 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers squad for the opening two games which occurred on March 25th and 30th respectively in the Dominican Republic.
The midfielder who currently plies his trade with the Welsh unit, Connah’s Quay Nomads in the Cymru Premier club, is the Golden Jaguars most high profile alumni following stints in the English Premier League with Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City.
He has scored nine goals from 17 appearances for the national programme, with three goals recorded in the team’s maiden 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup campaign, in the process securing the label of Guyana’s lone scorer in the event.
Guyana suffered an embarrassing 3-0 loss to traditional rival Trinidad and Tobago in their first qualifier at the Estadio Panamericano. However, the Guyanese rebounded to defeat lowly Bahamas 4-0 in their second qualifier at the Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez.
Presently, the Guyanese sit in third place with three points, trailing St Kitts and Nevis, and Trinidad and Tobago, who possess six and four points respectively. Guyana will continue their Group ‘F’ campaign as they travel to St Kitts and Nevis for Friday June 4. They will conclude the group round at home on Tuesday June 8 against Puerto Rico. Only the group winner will progress to the second stage of the qualifiers.
