Three charged with breaching COVID measures

Three persons were charged on the West Coast of Demerara on Friday with breaching the COVID-19 emergency measures.

The Guyana Police Force said Eusbio Amsterdam was charged with failure to wear a face mask.

Amsterdam appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded guilty to the charge.

He was fined $5,000 or two weeks in jail if he cannot afford to pay the fine.

Also charged was Faleena Zahir, who also appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

She pleaded not guilty to charges of hosting a social activity and was placed on $15,000 bail. She also pleaded not guilty to the sale of spirituous liquor and was granted $20,000 bail on that charge.

Zahir is expected to make her next court appearance on May 13 for disclosure and fixture of her trial date.

Meanwhile, like Zahir, Michael Kassim was charged with hosting a social activity and he too was granted bail on the charge.

He was released on $20,000 bail and the matter was adjourned to May 4 for trial.
