The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) had aspired to send a four-member team of boxers to Poland to compete at the Youth World Boxing Championships.
That plan was kayoed due to concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic which has seen a spike in hospitalities and deaths locally and overseas.
Ironically, the championships which starts today will be held under the motto “Protect yourself and others at all times”, noting safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, Guyana has recorded 19 deaths for the month of April so far after recording 233 since the pandemic began last March.
In a recent statement, the Ministry of Health disclosed that Guyana is experiencing its third wave of the deadly virus which is attacking the younger population.
To date, the pandemic has claimed almost three million lives worldwide.
The announcement that the team will remain here was made yesterday.
When Stabroek Sport contacted President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle, he pointed out that “The health and safety of our boxers is paramount to the GBA”.
Ninvalle was adamant that the executive “made the right call” to shelf the plan to attend the tournament and the same decision may be taken with the Olympic Qualifiers next month in Argentina if the COVID-19 situation remains the same or worsens.
Richard Howard (60kg), Mark Crawford (64 kg), Abiola Jackman (75kg) and Emanuel Pompey (75 kg) were the pugilists shortlisted to represent the Golden Arrowhead at the event.
