A teenage mother was arrested on Friday after her child was found dead in a drain at Parika Backdam.
In a statement, the Guyana Police Force disclosed that the 21-month-old toddler was found dead in a drain around 7 pm on Friday night.
The force said its enquiries found that the child was left in the drain by his mother, who claimed that he was hungry so she went in search of something to eat. Later that day when she was questioned about the whereabouts of her child, she ran and jumped into a canal.
The police were subsequently summoned. The statement added that after the mother was taken out of the canal, she took the police to the location where she left the child.
The child was immediately rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. No marks of violence were seen on his body.
The child’s body is currently at the Ezekiel Funeral home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The mother was escorted to the Parika Police Station, where she was told of the allegations and cautioned. She gave a statement and was placed in custody pending further investigations.
