GFF commences COVID-19 testing of national footballers

With the aim of resumption training for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), the local governing body, commenced COVID-19 testing yesterday for several members of the training roster at the entity’s National Training Center, Providence.

This was disclosed by a source close to the federation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. According to the source, the testing phase which featured members of both the playing and the management teams, was conducted by officials from the Ministry of Health.

The source expounded, “The testing of the players was held at the training center in Providence, the players had to meet there for 11:00am. Every local player was supposed to get tested today, those who were part of the team for the games in the Dominican Republic and those who are part of the training squad. Some members of the management team were also tested today.”

The source added, “The date for the confirmation of the sessions has not been finalized yet by the federation but it is expected to be soon. Once the date is confirmed, it will be relayed to the players, as well as the results of the respective tests.”

Guyana will resume their World Cup qualifying campaign on June 4th when they oppose St. Kitts and Nevis. They will then end their group campaign four days later against Puerto Rico. The Golden Jaguars in their opening match of the qualifying tournament on March 25th in the Dominican Republic, lost 3-0 to Trinidad and Tobago.

Guyana rebounded from that opening loss to defeat The Bahamas 4-0 on March 31st. At the moment, the Guyanese sit in third place on three points, trailing St. Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago who possess six and four points respectively. Puerto Rico and The Bahamas occupy fourth and fifth place respectively on one and zero point apiece. Only the group winner will progress to the second stage of the qualifiers.
