The Village Council of Aishalton, Region Nine yesterday imposed a one-month lockdown on the community after confirming nine cases of COVID-19 in the village.
“There are now 9 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in the Deep South Rupununi in Aishalton village. The village council asks that everyone remain calm, and please do not stigmatize those who are tested positive,” the South Rupununi District Council (SRDC) said on Facebook yesterday.
Having put stringent measures in place since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in Guyana the community managed to avoid an outbreak of the virus for more than a year.
According to the SRDC, five households are affected. They said that contact tracing was done and it was found that 36 persons were in contact with the patients. The persons identified will be tested today and tomorrow.
The lockdown went into effect yesterday and was imposed after consultations with the health authorities. Until then only essential services will be allowed into the village and persons from Lethem or Georgetown travelling to the community will have to quarantine for a given period of time.
A 6 pm to 6 am curfew was also instituted. The measures will be enforced by the village council, police, army and health team.
