Martha Miguel, the mother of the child who was found dead in a drain at Parika Backdam, was on Tuesday remanded to prison after being charged with manslaughter.
Miguel, 18, appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court where the charge was read to her.
She was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until June 1, 2021.
The police had reported that the 21-month-old toddler was found dead in a drain around 7 pm on Friday night.
Enquiries had revealed that the child was left in the drain by his mother, who claimed that he was hungry so she went in search of something to eat. Later that day when she was questioned about the whereabouts of her child, she ran and jumped into a canal.
The police were subsequently summoned. After the mother was taken out of the canal, she took the police to the location where she left the toddler.
The child was immediately rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. No mark of violence was seen on his body.
