A number of communities in Region Four are seeing spikes in COVID-19 infections as the region continues to record the majority of the new cases daily.
This was stated by Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony who during his daily COVID-19 update yesterday informed that in Region Four there are areas that the authorities have seen recording persistent cases. The minister went on to provide a breakdown and noted that the cases have been spread across communities on the East Bank of Demerara, Georgetown and the East Coast of Demerara.
“So on the East Bank we have had for a number of weeks now, cases in Diamond, Herstelling, Eccles. In Georgetown we have seen cases in Kitty, Campbellville, parts of South Ruimveldt… And on the East Coast we have seen in the Lusignan, Good Hope area that we are getting a number of cases”, Dr Anthony said.
He went on to add that across these general areas, there are communities that might have reported small amounts of cases. However, he indicated that the communities that he mentioned have recorded in excess of 10 to 15 cases.
While he iterated that there has been a large increase in cases in the region, authorities have also seen a significant increase in hospitalisations and deaths as a result of the novel coronavirus. “We have also seen an increase in hospitalisation and I’m sure everybody have seen that we are also getting more deaths because the people who are coming into hospital, they are much sicker and we have more difficulties in managing these complicated patients when they come at this late stage to the ICU,” Anthony noted.
With that he added that currently over 70 persons are hospitalised across Guyana for COVID-19 with nine persons at the West Demerara Hospital and three persons each at the New Amsterdam and Linden Hospital. The remaining persons he said are patients at the Ocean View Facility with 15 persons in the Intensive Care Unit.
