Dear Editor,
Small businesses have brought to my attention their inability to register with Exxon and affiliated companies to get contracts under the local content policy. They also say they are unable to contact Exxon via phone and emails. Messages left and letters sent are unanswered.
In order to affirm their complaints, I attempted to register a small business at the link provided by Exxon without success. The link seems dysfunctional. I sent an email without a response. No one answered the telephone when I called. I visited two offices in Georgetown and was told by the guard at each location that visits are not allowed and that I should phone or send an email. I did both without a response. I phoned the headquarters in Houston with a secretary answering the call and was promised that someone would return my call at my number provided. I have been waiting for months for a return call.
Are Guyanese being taken for a ride? Is local content policy being enforced? I read of Exxon hiring 2300 Guyanese? Really? Where and in doing what? The job titles, positions, and salary paid as against those of foreigners would be interesting.
Sincerely,
Dr. Vishnu Bisram
