There is still a possibility that South Africa Under-19s could tour the Caribbean this year.
This is according to Chief Executive Officer of Cricket West Indies, Johnny Grave, who made the disclosure to Stabroek Sport yesterday.
Grave explained that the tour is a reciprocal one from when the Caribbean youths toured South Africa in 2017.
However, with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, planning has not gone as simple as was expected.
Grave revealed that the tour is expected to be five Youth One Day Internationals, the same amount the two sides played on the African continent four years ago.
Additionally, the CEO noted that it could possibly be in August or the next school holidays or even in December with school and travelling one of the main concerns.
West Indies are also geared to host the International Cricket Council’s Under-19 World Cup next year.
The Guyana government and the Guyana Cricket Board have discussed submitting a bid to host the event.
The tournament will feature 16 teams during a one-month competition starting early 2022.
This is the first time the West Indies will host the event and it is likely to be staged across three host countries featuring 64 matches in the 50-over format.
The teams will battle for one of the eight spots in the Super League stage before having the chance to win the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Trophy.
The Under-19 World Cup will be the fifth major event to be hosted in the Caribbean following the successful staging of the Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2007, Men’s and Women’s T20 World Cup in 2010 and the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2018.
