Guyana’s Chelsea Edghill and Shemar Britton were eliminated from the mixed doubles competition of the 2021 Latin America Olympic Qualifiers in Rosario, Argentina, yesterday.
Coming up against the pair of Alberto Nino and Nathaly Paredes of Ecuador, the Guyanese lost 9-11, 8-11, 7-11 and 9-11.
The defeat brought the curtain down on the Guyanese participation at the qualifiers.
The mixed doubles qualifiers were won by the Cuban pair of Jorge Campos and Daniela Fonseca Carrazana who defeated surprise finalists Juan Lamadrid and Pauline Vega 4-3 in the final.
The Cubans won 9-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-6, 14-12, and 11-7 to book their spot at the Tokyo Olympics.
Lamadrid and Vega took out the top seeds Brian Afanador and Adriana Diaz 4-0 in the quarterfinals before ousting Argentina’s Horacio Cifuentes and Camila Arguelles in the semis 4-3.
In the bottom half of the draw Campos and Fonseca Carraenza whipped Brazil’s Vitor Ishy and Bruna Takahashi 4-0 in the quarter finals before stopping Mexico’s Marcos Madrid and Yadira Silva 4-1 in the semis.
