Jaikarran Ramnarine, who fatally stabbed his drinking partner during an argument at Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara, was remanded to prison on Wednesday.
Ramnarine appeared before Magistrate Melissa Mittelholzer at the Mahaicony Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with the murder of Khemraj Sukhan.
He was not required to plead to the charge and was subsequently remanded to prison.
Sukhan, 48, of Coconut Dam, Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara, was murdered between 9 pm on Saturday and early Sunday morning.
Police investigations revealed that Ramnarine and Sukhan, who live in the same yard, were drinking earlier in the day, which later led to an argument and confrontation. However, the suspect left and went home.
At around 9.30 pm, Ramnarine \returned to the house where they were drinking and the argument resumed and as a result he reportedly stabbed Sukhan.
Police had said Ramnarine picked up a knife and stabbed Sukhan in the right side of the chest and the left arm. Sukhan collapsed and fell on a mattress in the verandah.
It was reported that sometime around 2.40 am on Sunday, Ramnarine visited the Cane Grove Police Station and reported that he and Sukhan had a fight and he had fallen onto a knife and suffered injuries.
Meanwhile, a post-mortem examination conducted on the remains of the deceased revealed his cause of death as stab wound to the heart.
