I say Congress over petition appeal

Dear Editor,

I have been asked for my view on the throwing out of the elections petition by the Chief Justice, on Monday. Those who follow this space can attest to the fact that I have not been in the habit of commenting on this issue. Had I not been asked by some youths, I doubt I would be proffering these few words.

I consider myself first and foremost a voice crying for African Guyanese to get their just dues, socially, politically and economically in Guyana. I have no apology for saying this, because my love for battered and bruised African Guyanese does not translate into disliking my Indo, Portuguese, Amerindian and Chinese brothers and sisters.

We will never return to power through the winning of any elections petition. It will not happen. I cannot join the bandwagon of political posturing to keep our support base intact. I cannot lie to a people I truly love. I cannot be a part of giving them false hope that they may be distracted from what really must be done to once again become a viable party with a fighting chance to once again govern.

I wish to advise us that our energies should be dedicated to doing the right and sensible thing which is to put our house in proper order instead of once again giving our supporters false hope in appealing the Chief Justice’s decision on the matter of the petition.

I shall not stand by and see this charade continue. We must be truthful with our supporters. We have done them a disservice while in power and we are slighting them while in opposition. Time waits on none and every day we put off what is truly to be done to be stronger in our representation of our supporters will inevitably cause us to be ill prepared when the time shall have come to face the polls.

I cannot blame many of our supporters for going along with this time wasting circus because they believe and trust their leadership and so it must be but that trust and support must not be taken for granted by the Leader of the Opposition and former president David Granger. This is the time to be selfless and altruistic. It is certainly not the time for grandstanding to save yourself while the process is being undermined and the party is further weakened. We know who can pull the real job off.

I say Congress over petition appeal.
