A labourer yesterday died after he fell from a six-storey building under construction on Regent Street, Georgetown.

The deceased, Lloyd Feroze, 25, also known as ‘Toney’, of Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara, fell at about 1.25pm yesterday.

The police in a report stated that Feroze at about 1.25pm was mixing cement on the ground floor and upon completion made his way to the fifth floor of the building which was said to have an open space with a stairway in the centre.

According to the report, some two minutes later, a loud crashing sound was heard and upon checking it was observed that Feroze had fallen to the ground floor, hitting his head and other parts of his body in the process.

He was picked up by an ambulance and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was examined and pronounced dead on arrival.

The body is presently at the GPH mortuary.

Meanwhile, an eyewitness who asked not to be named during an interview with Stabroek News, stated that she was conducting her business when she heard a loud sound as if something had fallen.

The woman said she immediately left what she was doing and headed to the construction site where she observed Feroze lying on the ground bleeding profusely.

The woman related that she told the other construction workers present on the scene to render assistance to the now deceased or “take him to the hospital”, but was told that they could not due to fear of being locked up by the police.

All the while she said, their phones were out and video recording.

The woman stated that the workers subsequently locked the gate to the construction area and only reopened it when the owner of the building, Glenn Lall, showed up. Some five minutes later, the ambulance arrived followed by the police.

The woman said she kept repeating that the deceased is someone’s son and lamented the fact that no assistance was rendered.

She said that Feroze’s accident was not the first and that only recently a vehicle after delivering cement to the worksite, struck a utility pole causing it to fall and damage property in proximity including a vendor’s stall and umbrella and a car.
