Two repeat offenders are among three men who were fined last week after pleading guilty to separate charges of attempting to commit a felony and possession of narcotics.
Shaquille Mentore, 21, of Newtown, Kitty, Georgetown; Gobin (only name given), 42, of Charlotte Street, George-town; and Kevin Subrim, 27, of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, were brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court when they confessed to separate offences.
Mentore and Gobin are jointly charged with breaking and entering the Craig Street, Campbellville, Georgetown home of Ariann Gordon and attempting to commit a felony.
The police prosecutor told the court that on the evening of April 16, the woman secured her home and at approximately 3am on April 17, she heard noise in the house and decided to summon the police. After a prompt response, the police arrested the two men who appeared to enter the home through a window located in the living room.
The two men who pleaded guilty were given an opportunity to explain themselves to the court. Mentore said that he has a young child and that his girlfriend cannot work because they cannot afford to place the child at a daycare. Gobin, who also pleaded guilty, said that he has young children to take care of.
Subrim meanwhile, pleaded guilty to the charge which states that on April 20 at Lamaha Street, Georgetown, he had in his possession, 9 grammes of cannabis.
The man who is a barber told the court that he uses the narcotic for recreational purposes and that it was actually 2 grammes of marijuana when it was weighed at the Police Station. He explained that he would normally eat it and it would open his appetite.
After listening to the man, the Magistrate fined him $5,000 or in default three weeks in jail.
