Sports promoter Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major is to be charged with allegedly breaching the current restriction on the holding social activities.
Major, of Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden, was expected to be charged on Thursday at the Linden Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Wanda Fortune.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the offence was committed on April 25 at the man’s residence. However, when the matter was called, Major was not present in court, hence the matter was adjourned until May 13.
The charge stemmed from the circulation on social media of a video of a party reportedly hosted by Major in defiance of the restrictions in place to curb the transmission of COVID-19. Scores of persons were seen partying without masks and without observing social distancing.
The police have recently moved to step up the enforcement of the restrictions.
