As the West Indies women gear up for a second training camp beginning today, head coach, Courtney Walsh, says that the theme of the camp is consistency and awareness.

Additionally, more match practice and  match simulations will also be on the agenda of the former West Indies speedster.

“Well, we will be having more matches in the camp and more game scenarios time as well,” said Walsh via Zoom yesterday.

He explained that time in the middle was very valuable adding that one of the objectives of the camp was to give the ladies as much time as possible in the middle.

“Nothing beats time in the middle. So, we’ll have a couple of days where we have just game scenarios where we’ll put people in different positions, different things to do, similar to a match,” he declared.

According to Walsh, the focus on  consistency and awareness was in an effort to remove the dependency on just a few players.

“With this camp coming up now I’m using the theme of consistency and awareness where I will try to get them to be more consistent in every department of the game. And also awareness, in terms of individual awareness, team awareness, game awareness, that kind of thing. So those are two areas I will be focusing a lot on in this camp. That’s why we’re gonna be doing other stuff to improve the skill sets on our level,” Walsh said.

He also indicated that there was still a possibility that the women could go on a tour but that is yet to be confirmed.

“We’re still hopeful but nothing has been confirmed as yet of having a tour either somebody coming or we going. We’re not sure what’s happening yet. So as soon as CWI (Cricket West Indies) confirms the position we can confirm the full length of our plan, but in the interim, we’ve planned to have a fair amount of game scenarios and more practice matches.”

According to Walsh, the last camp was successful but was more of an assessment camp.

“With the success of the last camp, we used a team and I hadn’t seen them before so that was more or less an assessment camp. I think it was very successful in assessing where the players were and having a rough idea of what we needed to do what we can do and you know we’re going to go about it. So I was pretty pleased with being able to see them for the first time and I was able to assess them myself personally,” he stated.
