A D’Urban Street mother of four is now dead after being stabbed a reported 14 times last evening by her common-law husband, who later attempted to end his own life.
The dead woman is 44-year-old Suanna Wilson, called ‘Nicola,’ of 57 D’Urban Street, who was attacked just before 7 pm during an argument with her partner, Lawrence Brummell. Up to press time, he was a patient under guard at the George-town Public Hospital, after he reportedly ingested a poisonous substance.
Wilson, who was the owner of the Blue Flame Snackette at Vreed-en-Hoop, had just returned home before the attack occurred.
A relative of Wilson, who witnessed the altercation, recounted hearing the woman screaming. When the relative ran up the stairs, Brummell was seen attacking Wilson with a knife. The relative tried to intervene but was unable to stop the attack.
Wilson was stabbed about her body and face with severe stab wounds visible on her forehead and chest. She fell to the platform where she died in a pool of her own blood.
The motive for the attack was unclear.
Sunday Stabroek understands that following the altercation Brummell, a plumber, jumped into his car and drove to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he told doctors he had consumed a poisonous substance. His condition was later described as stable.
As news of the murder spread, relatives and friends of the woman descended on the scene and filled the air with their screams.
The dead woman’s older sister, Sonnie Wilson, who had travelled to George-town to celebrate their youngest sister’s birthday, collapsed and had to be removed. Police were forced to restrain a brother and another sister, who repeatedly demanded to see the body.
“Not me sister! Not me sister and on me birthday! Ow is me birthday! Nicola is me birthday!” the inconsolable sibling lamented.
According to Sonnie, she last spoke to her sister on Friday when they discussed plans to decorate their mother’s tomb ahead of Mother’s Day.
“I didn’t tell [Nicola] that I was coming ‘cause I say I gonna surprise her so I went to the shop…[is there] I get a call that me sister get stabbed,” she said.
She explained that the family was very familiar with Brummell as he and Wilson had been in a relationship for more than a decade and never had a problem with him.
“I didn’t know of any problems between the two of them. We don’t get problem with him I owned him as my brother-in-law and always called him bruds,” Sonnie said.
However a relative who lived in the home explained that Brummell regularly abused Wilson.
