Chiung Mouth now has potable water

Chiung Mouth, Region Eight is the latest community to gain easy access to potable water, with the construction of a new $30 million water supply system.

A GWI release on Saturday stated that the water system was commissioned by Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, on Friday, April 30 in keeping with a pledge she made to residents when she visited last October.

The Minister expressed her gratitude to GWI’s Hinterland Director, Ramchand Jailal and his team as well as the contractor – R. Kissoon Contracting Services – for their dedication in completing the well.

Although the completion of works went past the original deadline of December 2020, the minister explained that this was unavoidable as the rig had become stuck enroute to the project site owing to the inclement weather.

Jailal informed that residents had been without access to potable water for several years due to an aged water system becoming non-functional. The old well, he said, was too shallow and therefore didn’t last long.

This meant that the villagers depended heavily on water from creeks located long distances away from the community. They also practiced rainwater harvesting.
