The Guyana Police Force is investigating an incident in which a security guard allegedly discharged a round at a pork-knocker.
According to a police statement, the incident occurred on Tuesday at about 9:00 hrs at Oku Backdam, Region Seven. It said that 29-year-old Kurt Walcott, a pork-knocker of Queenstown Village, Essequibo Coast, was allegedly shot by a security guard working at a mining company at Oku Backdam.
Investigations have so far revealed that the security guard was armed with a Smith and Wesson semi-automatic rifle. Walcott told police he was passing by the mining operation where the guard is employed when he heard a loud explosion. He simultaneously felt a burning sensation in his left shoulder, and then realized that he had been shot.
The man was taken to the Bartica Public Hospital where he is currently being treated. His condition is listed as stable. Meanwhile the security guard has been arrested and remains in custody. He reportedly has refused to respond to questioning. The firearm was lodged with the police.
