The Sunrise Bakery in Capoey, Region Two, officially opened its doors to the public on Friday.
The bakery, which is the result of a collaborative effort between the Guyana Foundation and the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, was declared open in the presence of First Lady Arya Ali, Prime Minister Mark Phillips, members of the Regional Administration, members of the Toshaos Council, and Canadian High Commissioner Mark Berman, among several others.
According to a statement by the Guyana Foundation, approximately $15 million was spent to establish the bakery. A building was donated by the village council but had to be demolished and rebuilt. State-of-the-art baking equipment were procured from the United States.
A total of 18 persons were trained to become bakers and are now employed at the bakery. They also benefitted from training in basic financial and small business management.
The bakery should be able to sustain the entire community and also provide meals for children in Capoey. It is the hope of the Foundation that the bakery will soon be able to cater and provide for surrounding communities on the Essequibo Coast.
The release said that the Foundation has been involved in similar projects around Guyana and its goal is to empower men and women by offering skills to uplift themselves.
