A 17-year-old teenager, who the police described as “a known character,” was shot and injured on Friday afternoon after he attempt to escape ranks who were conducting an operation in Sophia.
According to a Guyana Police Force report, the shooting occurred around 4.40 pm on Friday at Dennis Street and ‘D’ Field Access Road, Sophia.
At the time, a team of ranks were conducting a raid.
The police explained that while the ranks were in the vicinity of Dennis Street and ‘D’ Field Access road, Sophia, they noticed the teenager riding a motorcycle. He had a haversack on his back.
Upon seeing the police vehicle, the statement said the teenager immediately made a U-turn and sped off into a western direction on Dennis Street.
“A chase ensued and after navigating several cross streets and back roads the character eventually abandoned his motorcycle at his home and ran into his yard,” the statement further said.
It noted that the teen then scaled his neighbour’s fence while a police chase after him.
As ranks closed in to capture him, the police added that a scuffle ensued during which the teenager held onto the firearm of the rank.
As the scuffle continued, the firearm went off.

He was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was admitted. His condition is listed as stable
