Some 18 cricketers below 17 years of age yesterday benefited from an introductory course into the laws of cricket at Golden Fleece Sports Club, Essequibo Coast.
The programme, which was kept under strict COVID-19 guidelines, was sponsored by the club and comes under the team Daniels ‘More Cricket and Cricket Education’ banner for not only young cricketers, but also aspiring umpires, coaches and scorers in South Essequibo.
The event was blessed by recently elected South Essequibo Cricket Committee Chairman, Fezal Mohammed.
Experienced umpire, Deva Das carried the up-and-coming prospects through the paces as their 90-minute-long interactive session centered around the various modes of dismissals.
National player and Cricket West Indies certified Level Two coach, Antony Adams, was also on hand and facilitated any clarity or questions the under-17 players had to ask.
According to Adams, understanding the rules of the game is one of the key aspects of the sport adding that it is vital that the players as they begin their careers, understand what the rules are.
“With the rain forcing us off the field, we decided to utilize the time to do some class work with the youngsters and we found that most of them had a fair knowledge of the more popular ways of getting out such as bowled, caught, run out, stumped and leg before wicket but were curious to know about dismissals like hit wicket, hitting the ball twice, obstructing the field and time out,” said Adams.
