A man charged with stealing two motorcycles got a reprieve on Monday when one of the victims decided not to proceed with the charge.
Kurt Steele, 23, a pork-knocker of Charlestown, Georgetown, was arraigned before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in a Georgetown court, where one of the charges was dismissed. He was, however, remanded for the other charge.
It is alleged that on June 21, 2020, at Hunter Street, he stole a motorcycle valued $85,000 from Peter Talbot. It was also alleged that on April 25, at Eping Avenue, Bel Air, while in the company of another and while armed with a gun, he stole a motorcycle valued $190,000, property of Chelsea Barton, a city constable.
After Steele denied both charges, the court heard from the Police Prosecutor that on both occasions, the man ambushed the virtual complainants and stole the bikes. The prosecutor also objected to bail being granted and the court heard that the man had a previous conviction. The prosecutor also reminded the court that the two charges are serious and should be treated as such.
Steele told the court that in 2018 he was sentenced to four years behind bars after he admitted to the court that he was trafficking narcotics. This newspaper reported that Steele was sentenced by Magistrate Judy Latchman on the charge that on May 4, 2018, at Broad Street, Charlestown, he had in his possession 453 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Meanwhile, Barton, who was present at the court, said that her motorcycle was recovered. She also told the Magistrate that she wanted to discontinue her criminal complaint. The magistrate then dismissed the charge but Steele was remanded until May 24 for the charge involving Talbot.
