Five construction workers were held at gunpoint and robbed on Tuesday held while sheltering from the rain in a container at “A” Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) stated that the five men, who were conducting road works within the area, were approached by two identifiable men who subsequently relieved them of their valuables.
The report said a 32-year-old operator /supervisor was relieved of a Samsung cellular phone valued at $130,000, several piece of jewellery carrying a total value of $115,000, $70,000 in cash, along with several personal documents and two Digicel phone cards.
Another worker was relieved of a Samsung cellular phone valued at $56,000, a gold ring valued at $30,000 and $7,000 in cash.
A third worker was relieved of a Samsung cellular phone valued at $35,000, a Blu phone valued at $6,000 and $5,000 in cash.
A fourth worker was robbed of a ZTE cellphone valued at $32,000, a silver chain worth $10,000 and $5000 in cash, while another was robbed of $4,000 cash.
The police stated that one of the suspects, armed with a handgun, discharged a round inside the container before assaulting the victims. After collecting the valuables, the police said, the perpetrators barricaded the victims inside the container and escaped.
