Authorities have noticed a change in Guyana’s COVID-19 mortality pattern as younger persons are dying from the virus.
This is according to Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony who stated on Friday that over the past few weeks health authorities have noticed a shift.
“What we have noticed over the last couple of weeks Is that we have seen a change in the mortality patterns” he said, while adding that they have seen a number of deaths within the 40 to 50 years age category, with a few in the 30 to 40 years age group and approximately three deaths in the 20 to 30 years group.
“Initially when we started monitoring this (COVID-19 deaths), we noticed that older people and people with a lot of comorbidities were more at risk and therefore they become sick very quickly, they get into the hospital and most of them end up in the ICU and some of them unfortunately would die”, Anthony noted.
The Minister said, “It is something that we have to be mindful of and if younger people or more active persons thought that they would only get the milder form of the disease well now the new information that we are getting should tell people to be more cautious”.
