Corentyne man wanted by CANU turns self in

Omesh Lakeram, the Corentyne resident who was wanted by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) in relation to the recent seizure of 207 lbs of suspected cannabis turned himself into the agency on Wednesday.
CANU Head, James Singh yesterday confirmed that Lakeram is currently in custody as the investigation continues.
A wanted bulletin was issued for Lakeram, a resident of Lot 111 No. 68 Village Corentyne last Tuesday.
CANU in a statement had said that after days of surveillance, ranks observed individuals coming through a track within Number 68 village with flashlights around 4am on May 10th.
At the same time, the statement said a vessel was also seen coming off the shoreline.
As the persons approached the location, the ranks identified themselves and ordered that they stop.
“This caused the individuals to drop what they were carrying and scatter in different directions. Officers attempted to pursue, but due to poor visibility and concerns of safety, they retired,” the statement noted.
When the ranks returned to the location where the items were dropped, they discovered four bags with a total of 80 parcels of marijuana, weighing 94 kg or 207lbs. The bags were transported to CANU’s headquarters where they were processed.
Lakeram is likely to appear in court soon.
