As many as eight houses located at Zorg-en-Hoop, Blairmont, West Bank Berbice, were damaged by the heavy winds during a freak storm on Thursday afternoon.
No major injuries were recorded as the occupants managed to quickly get out of their homes once they realised that the integrity of the buildings was being threatened.
Stabroek News was told that in one instance a three-year-old girl was in a hammock in the veranda of her home when sections of the roof collapsed. However, relatives reported that she escaped with minor injuries to her foot.
Regional Vice Chairman Rion Peters, who was on the ground shortly after the report of the damage, yesterday told Stabroek News that it was quite an unfortunate event. However, he added, “We are working with the family and the CDC to assist the family, bringing some normalcy to their lives.”
As of yesterday residents had collectively estimated their losses in millions.
Peters also reported to Stabroek News that there was an accumulation of water across the region yesterday as a result of the prolonged rainfall. However, he noted that this was expected and that he and his team remained on the ground working.
In Region Six, there were several reports of flooding in the East Bank Berbice, Williams-burgh, Port Mourant, Upper Corentyne, East Canje Berbice and other areas.
The flooding was localised to yards, gardens and overflowed drains and trenches bordering the roads.
Regional Vice Chairman, Zamal Hussain traversed the region, visiting pump stations and kokers and ensuring that emergency works were being carried out.
