Three Berbice ranks from the Upper Corentyne area are currently being questioned after they were accused of stealing over $20 million from a Chinese national they intercepted earlier in the week for illegally entering Guyana.
Commander of Region Six Jairam Ramlakhan, when contacted, advised Stabroek News to contact the Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU).
A source has since confirmed that SOCU is investigating the matter. Stabroek News was told, that SOCU visited the region earlier in the week, and as of yesterday the three lawmen were under arrest.
Based on information gathered, the accused ranks are a constable, a corporal and a sergeant, all based at the Springlands Police Station.
According to information gathered, the sergeant had received information that on Wednesday Chinese nationals were passing through his district after entering Guyana, and so they intercepted the vehicle.
The foreign nationals were intercepted with several parcels of cash but when the parcels were being lodged by the lawmen one of the detainees noticed that some were missing but no heed was paid to them.
After being charged and released from police custody, the Chinese national contacted a senior police in Georgetown and informed him of what had transpired after which the information was forwarded to SOCU and an investigation was launched.
Meanwhile, another source based at the same location told Stabroek News, that before it was discovered that some cash was missing, the Chinese national offered to pay the three police officers US$10,000 each to be released but they had refused to accept same.
