A father of five was on Saturday crushed by a truck he was driving after he fell out of the vehicle when it toppled down a hill at 26 Miles Port Kaituma, in Region One.
Dead is Sheldon Dainty, 37, a driver of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara. The Guyana Police Force said Dainty was pronounced dead after he was transported to the Port Kaituma District Hospital after the accident.
According to a Guyana Police Force statement, on Saturday morning at 6.15 am, Dainty was driving a truck, #GSS 4472, at 26 Miles, Port Kaituma, with two other occupants in the vehicle. They were Bryan Singh, 40, of Parika, East Bank Essequibo, and Kurt Hernandez, 34, of 1 Mile Port Kaituma.
The police were told the accident occurred when the truck started to ascend a hill. One of the occupants related that Dainty encountered mechanical problems, which caused the truck to start rolling down the hill at a fast rate of speed. This resulted in the truck crashing into a barricade and then turning turtle.
As a result of the truck toppling, Dainty and Singh fell out of the vehicle and the truck reportedly rolled over Dainty’s body as it descended.
Dainty received multiple injuries about his body, including to the head, as did Singh, the police said.
The two men — Dainty in an unconscious condition and Singh in a semi-unconscious condition — were picked up by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Port Kaituma District Hospital.
A doctor pronounced the Dainty dead on arrival and Singh was admitted as a patient suffering from pains to his abdomen and about his body. He has since been referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further medical attention.
“We ain’t tekking it light at all. Everybody tekking it on,” a nephew of the now dead man told Sunday Stabroek when contacted.
He explained that his uncle, who had five children, the eldest of whom is preparing to sit CXC exams this year, was an ex-policeman. He said the man started driving trucks and excavators in Port Kaituma some years back but when he is not working he resides at La Parfaite Harmonie.
