Four more COVID deaths take death toll to 355

Guyana’s death toll from the novel coronavirus has increased to 355 following the confirmation of four more fatalities, which occurred on Thursday and Friday.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health on Saturday identified the deceased as an 80-year-old Region Ten man and a 35-year-old Region Five man, who both died on Thursday, and an 83-year-old man from Region Three and a 59-year-old woman from Region Three who both died on Friday.

The patients, who were admitted with COVID-19 like symptoms, died while receiving care. Samples were taken at the time of admission and they subsequently returned positive tests, the ministry said.

The Region Five fatality has been identified as Pandit Rajin Lalaram, who died last Thursday evening in the Intensive Care Unit at the Liliendaal Hospital.

Meanwhile, the country’s total confirmed number of cases to date has increased to 16,014 after 111 new cases were recorded from 1,052 tests.

The updated COVID-19 dashboard showed that new cases were recorded in nine of the 10 administrative regions: Region One (1), Region Two (1), Region Three (13), Region Four (62), Region Five (4), Region Six (9), Region Seven (4), Region Nine (1) and Region Ten (16). There were no new cases recorded in Region Eight.

There are now 1,949 active cases, 117 of which are in institutional isolation while another 1,813 are in home isolation. The number of persons in the country’s COVID-19 ICU stood at 19, while 165 additional persons recovered from the virus, increasing the country’s total recovered cases to 13,710.
