Dear Editor,
May 26 is upon us, and I have heard no announcements on the conferring of National Awards. Many extraordinary Guyanese work in the background to make this country better and national awards have historically been a way to recognize that. Many of us remember the decade long hiatus under a previous PPP/C administration where no National Awards were conferred. It is my fervent hope that history isn’t about to repeat itself. To the people who will say there are more important issues, I say of course there are. No one will argue that point. However it seems a bit hypocritical to wonder why outstanding Guyanese increasingly call it quits here, or to try and woo a diaspora, when we can’t even recognize outstanding deserving Guyanese using one of the easiest methods that exist.
Sincerely,
V. Hemsworth
