In an effort to produce more high profile cricketers and administrators, Team Daniels has begun a weekly coaching seminar for interested Essequibians.
In a statement by the organization, the body noted “It’s time for Essequibo Coast/Pomeroon to start producing Test players, moreso international players. We the members of Team Daniels for more cricket for cricketers and coaching education continue to invite all age females and under 15 males to our sessions.”
The sessions are conducted on Saturdays from 09.00 hours to noon.
Last Saturday, 20 children turned out for the seminar where experienced umpire, Deva Dass, schooled them on the laws of the game. The participants were also given a brief guidance on the proper way to wear a face mask and obey the guidelines to deal with COVID-19 in the sports world.
According to the organizers, the initiative has received the approval of the South Essequibo Cricket Committee Chairman, Fezal Mohammed.
Meanwhile, the youths benefited from a fielding session with Cricket West Indies Level Two coach, Anthony Adams.
The Essequibo Franchise skipper and national left-arm spinner detailed, “It was mainly about the fundamentals in this department that we focused on. You know the basic standing position, anticipation, catching technique and reading the game.”
In an afternoon session, 10 players were carried through the paces with Adams, who committed to playing at the highest level and imparting his knowledge and experience to help the youngsters of South Essequibo sharpen their skills so that they could one day represent the West Indies.
With talented players such as Avinash Persaud, Sheldon Charles, Lance Roberts, Nathan Persaud, David Williams, Orlando Jailall, Parmeshwar Parsotam all showing promise at the junior level, Adams accepted the challenge to aid in producing a Test player within the near future.
Out-of-favour, West Indies pacer, Ronsford Beaton, who has experienced troubles with his bowling action, is on the radar for the group as they believe under the wings of Forbes Daniels and Adams, “he is sure to improve.”
The programme is geared to cover an overall development in each department and to give players 40 hours of match time with two Two-day matches.
The coaching staff consists of Adams, Ryan Fredericks, Rayon Da Costa and Daniels.
Players interested in being a part of this programme are asked for a contribution of $2,500 to assist Adams in his traveling. Persons to contact are Anthony Adams (673-9049) and Sudarshan Muniram (638-2516) or Divine Ross (673-7327)
