As the police continue their search for the suspects in the murder of Ronald Omar Smith, the man who was shot during a robbery on Friday afternoon, the driver who accompanied Smith during his errands remains in custody.
Police Commander of Region 4A, Assistant Commissioner Simon McBean confirmed to Sunday Stabroek that the driver was assisting the police with the investigation up to late yesterday afternoon.
McBean said no other arrest had been made as yet.
Police on Friday said Smith, 40, a resident of Wakapau, Pomeroon, Esse-quibo, was shot dead as he was visiting his girlfriend after selling a quantity of gold.
The attack occurred around 4.25pm on Camp Street.
The police, in a report, said Smith made several stops using a car and conducting business in and out of the city in the company of a miner, who was the driver of the vehicle, PZZ 6065.
According to the police, initial investigations revealed that Smith had made a sale of gold and placed some $437,000 cash in a haversack and later went to visit his girlfriend.
The police added that Smith along with his girlfriend were standing in the vicinity of Impeccable Beauty Salon, when they were confronted by two men on a white motorcycle.
The pillion rider dismounted the motorcycle and discharged two rounds at Smith, who as a result fell to the ground.
The suspect then grabbed the haversack and subsequently made good his escape with his accomplice.
Smith was then taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he died while receiving care. His body was examined and three circular wounds were seen to the upper left shoulder, the middle region of the stomach and another in his right armpit.
The shooting was recorded by a nearby security camera, which is being reviewed by the police.
In the footage, seen by Sunday Stabroek, Smith and his girlfriend were standing together when a motorcycle with two men approached.
The pillion rider then dismounted and rushed towards Smith, who attempted to run away.
However, a scuffle ensued between Smith and his attacker over a haversack he had in his possession. Smith’s girlfriend fled.
The gunman managed to relieve Smith of the haversack after which he pointed to gun to his direction.
Shortly after, Smith was seen clutching his wounds as the gunman re-mounted the motor cycle and escape.
His accomplice remained seated on the motorcycle throughout the attack.
Meanwhile, although the police on Friday described Smith as a Trans Guyana Airways (TGA) baggage handler, the airline’s spokesman Kit Nascimento yesterday said the deceased was not an employee.
