A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Lance Corporal reportedly drowned yesterday after the boat in which he and other ranks were travelling capsized in the vicinity of Karasabai Village, in Region Nine 9 (Upper Takatu/Upper Essequibo).
Dead is Lance Corporal Barrington John, a resident of Paramakatoi Village, Region Eight.
In a statement last evening, the GDF confirmed that the accident occurred during the withdrawal of ranks from the Observation Post at Karasabai Village.
According to GDF, the boat capsized while the ranks were attempting to cross the Urara Creek, which was flooded.
“Lance Corporal Barrington John went under water due to the strong current and was later recovered in an unconscious state,” the GDF statement said.
He was rushed to the Karasabai District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Lance Corporal Barrington John served in the 241 Company of the 2 Infantry Battalion.
The GDF extended condolences to his relatives and friends.
