Walter Grant-Stuart, Suzanne Hamilton and Aaron Newton brought the curtain down on the Guyana Cycling Federation’s (GCF) National Road Race Championships yesterday with wins in their respective categories.
Grant-Stuart took the Masters title, Hamilton triumphed in the female division and Newton was the victor in the class of the juniors for the rain drenched event which was staged around the 11.3km Mahaica/Unity Circuit.
Ten years after winning the Senior National Road Race event, the differently abled Grant-Stuart earned the spoils eight-lap event to be crowned Master’s Road Race Champion 2021.
Grant-Stuart, who has aspirations of representing Guyana at the Para-Olympic Games this summer in Tokyo, Japan, led Junior Niles and Jaikarran Sukhai onto the podium.
In the junior category, 16 year-old ‘Young Steely’ Newton, was the first across the tape in the five-lap event. Mario Washington and Andrew Forrester placed second and third.
In the three-lap women’s event, Hamilton, of Linden, put on another dominant showing to cement her status as the woman to beat on a cycle in the 592. Clevicia Spencer and Felena Stephens earned the silver and bronze medals in the race.
