A miner died yesterday after a tree fell into a mining pit at the Sandhills Backdam, Cuyuni during heavy rain.
The police in a release today identified the deceased as Olrick Matthews. Two other men: Edwin Garraway, 49, of Diamond Housing Scheme and Bryan Richard, 40, of Pomeroon River were injured.
The police said that enquiries revealed that at around 12.45 pm, the three persons who are employed by Romeo King, a miner, were working when a heavy downpour – coupled with high winds – caused a tree to be uprooted and fall into the mining pit.
The other workers ran to their assistance and upon examination Matthews was found motionless.
A report was made and the body was escorted to Bartica Regional Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor who pronounced him dead on arrival.
Garraway suffered a fractured left hand while Richard sustained lacerations to his forehead.
Both are presently seeking medical attention at the Bartica Regional Hospital.
