Dear Editor,
Guyana will never be a truly united country as long as the PPP and PNC are continuously fighting each other.
Guyanese need to move past ethnic differences. Instead of tearing down each other’s cultural identity we could learn to promote each other’s culture in a more positive manner.
Some advocate giving up our cultural identity for a more nationalistic identity- as if by doing so will automatically make you into a better person.
I am more inclined to believe that the problem is not a cultural identity problem. It is more a sense of belonging to a group identity- which is really about a family- a Guyanese family.
We are Guyanese. But do we all believe that we should all have equal access to opportunities and resources? Or, do some of us believe that they are more entitled than others? Are we open to opportunities? Or, do we let opportunities pass us by then blame others and situations?
Guyana can be a united country; the onus is on the President of the day to reach across the political divide to make it happen.
Yours faithfully,
Sean Ori
