Local Track and Field athletes will have their last chance at qualifying for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan this summer when the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) stages its National Senior Championship from June 18-20.
The event, which will be held at the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora, concludes one day before the Olympic qualifying window closes on June 21.
Standouts like Emanuel Archibald (100m) , Jasmine Abrams (100m), Jenea McCammon (100mh) and Andrea Foster (800m), will be looking to record performances of their careers and punch tickets to the prestigious Games.
The quartet were all medalists at the just concluded Senior South American Championships, but failed to reach their respective qualifying marks for Tokyo.
Archibald earned a silver medal in the blue riband 100m men’s event in 10.23s, while Abrams sprinted to a bronze medal in the women’s 100m final clocking 11.50s.
McCammon also copped bronze in the 100m hurdles in 13.63s. Foster, also a bronze medalist, finished 2:05.93s in the two-lap race.
Archibald has to cross the line in 10.05s or better in the 100m to qualify for the Olympics.
Abrams, McCammon, and Foster will have to run 11.15s, 12.84s and 1:59.50s or better in their respective events.
Currently, Aliyah Abrams is the only track and field athlete that has qualified for the Olympics.
