Columbia family robbed of jewels

A Columbia, Essequibo Coast family was on Saturday night robbed of cash and jewellery after an unknown suspect broke into their home while they were asleep.

The items reported stolen are four gold chains valued $378,000, one gold band valued $240,000, three pairs of gold bangles valued $54,000 and $20,000 cash. The incident is reported to have occurred between 9:30 pm and 11:15 pm.

According to a police report, enquiries revealed that the fifty-six-year-old housewife, her husband and their grandson who reside at Back Street, Columbia secured their home and retired to bed at about 9:30 pm.

The couple while sleeping were startled by a noise in the house. Upon awakening, they saw the silhouette of a man and started to scream. Their screams scared off the intruder who made good his escape through a window.

It was said by the woman that after putting the lights on they discovered that their wardrobe had been broken into and the jewellery was missing. The perpetrator is believed to have entered the house through a window that was missing several louvre panes.

The report was made to the Anna Regina Police Station. An investigation is ongoing.
