A 16-year-old teenager is in an unconscious state after he was struck down on the Mon Repos Public Road on Saturday night by a minibus.
The victim has been identified as Vishwanauth Doodnauth of Dr Miller Street, Triumph, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Police in a statement yesterday said the driver of the minibus, BWW5336, identified as Quincy Trotman, 37, of Dochfour Housing Scheme, ECD fled the scene subsequent to the accident. However, yesterday he turned himself in at the Beterverwagting Police Station.
According to the preliminary investigation, Doodnauth and his younger brother on separate bicycles were riding across the road when the accident occurred at around 9.40 pm. The minibus was proceeding west on the southern carriageway.
As the brothers were crossing, the minibus collided with Doodnauth. The impact resulted in him falling on the road and sustaining injuries about his body.
Subsequent to the collision, the minibus stopped a short distance away and while several person exited the vehicle to render assistance, police said the driver sped away.
Public-spirited persons who were on the scene rushed to the teen’s assistance and transported him to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
He is currently a patient in the Intensive Care Unit suffering from Intracranial haemorrhaging.
The driver of the minibus is currently in custody assisting with investigations.
