The weightlifting fraternity was plunged into mourning on Friday following the passing of Winston Bentham, a long serving member in many capacities of the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA).
He was 88.
The highlight of his achievement was winning a silver medal for Guyana at the World Masters Weightlifting Championship in 1996 in Canada.
Bentham, who was a former vice-president, national coach and referee in the iron sport, was also a recipient of the Medal of Service for his contribution to sports.
According to current President, Deon Nurse, Bentham’s passing is a “great loss for the weight lifting fraternity.”
Nurse added yesterday that Bentham who was part of the fraternity since the 1940’s, was well known and well respected and it is heartbreaking to “lose someone with that wealth of knowledge.”
Bentham is survived by his many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, family and friends.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later. May his soul rest in peace.
